The epic shootout: Liverpool edge out Middlesbrough on penalties in round three, Capital One Cup

Liverpool held their nerve to see off Middlesbrough 14-13 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in the third round of the Capital One Cup.
The epic shootout, which was only settled when Boro's Albert Adomah missed with the 30th spot-kick, equalled the British record for the highest-scoring post-match contest, set over three years ago when Dagenham and Redbridge edged past Leyton Orient in a Football League Trophy tie.
After failures from Patrick Bamford and Raheem Sterling, the next 20 penalties in sudden death were all converted - until Adomah sent his effort wide.
Teenage midfielder Jordan Rossiter, a product of the Anfield academy system, had needed less than 10 minutes of normal time to make a significant contribution on his senior debut, but Adam Reach equalised for Boro to send the match past the 90-minute mark.
Suso stepped off the bench to put the hosts back in front in the second half of extra-time, but a moment of madness from Kolo Toure in the dying stages presented Bamford with an opportunity to level from the spot, resulting in the shootout which eventually put Liverpool into the fourth-round draw.
Early on in the match, a breakdown in communication between Boro goalkeeper Jamal Blackman and defender Kenneth Omeruo resulted in the pair being caught out of position and, despite Blackman blocking from Rickie Lambert, Anfield academy product Rossiter took full advantage to guide the ball into the back of the net from 35 yards out.

Jordan Rossiter: Enjoyed a dream start to his senior debut
Parity was restored just past the hour mark when Grant Leadbitter swung over a dangerous free-kick and Reach displayed the greater desire in a battle with Jose Enrique to nod in from close range.
It took until the 109th minute for Brendan Rodgers’ side to break through for a second time, with neat play from Adam Lallana leading to a scramble inside the Boro box which allowed Suso to drill low through a crowd of bodies on the line.
That looked like being enough, but a clumsy challenge from Toure on Bamford allowed the latter - on loan from Chelsea - to calmly stroke home from 12 yards in stoppage-time.
The 21-year-old then saw his effort in the resulting shoot-out saved by Simon Mignolet, but Sterling also failed from 12 yards and with the tie taken deep into sudden death, Adomah ended up being the fall guy as he blazed wide with the 30th kick of an astonishing contest.
Pressure
Rodgers suggested in the build-up to the game that the Liverpool shirt being "heavy" for incoming players to wear due to the pressure of expectation had been a contributing factor to the Reds' slow start to the season.
But there was little evidence of 17-year-old midfielder Rossiter experiencing such a feeling as his first senior appearance began with a bang.
Sterling chased a long pass over the top which Omeruo and Blackman got in a mess trying to deal with, and the latter then managed to get in the way of a follow-up shot by Lambert, the captain for the night making his first Liverpool start.
The loose ball fell to Rossiter, who caught out Blackman - a debutant himself, also on loan from Chelsea - with a calm, first-time shot into the net.

Adam Reach: Nodded home from close range
That the Liverpool youngster should appear so immediately comfortable in the team is perhaps unsurprising - he has been with the club's academy since under-six level.
But there seemed to be a malaise creeping back in for Rodgers' team, which showed seven changes from Saturday's 3-1 loss at West Ham, as the first half went on.
After Lallana struck wide in the 25th minute, the visitors started to show some threat, with Kike sending a volley over via a Lambert deflection and Mignolet then doing well to push away a powerful Lee Tomlin strike.
Boro kept pressing as the second half got under way, with Tomlin firing wide.
Perseverance
And their perseverance was duly rewarded when Leadbitter swung in a free-kick from just outside the corner of the area and hesitant Liverpool defending saw Reach get to the ball ahead of Enrique and glance in.
Sterling looked to reply but could only shoot at Blackman, and Reach was then unable to divert another headed effort on target.
Liverpool had penalty claims turned down when Lallana went to ground under the attentions of Ryan Fredericks, and after a further appeal for a handball just outside the box equally was also ignored, Lazar Markovic's through-ball to Sterling was intercepted by a last-ditch tackle.

Patrick Bamford: Mixed fortunes from the penalty spot
Rodgers sent on Mario Balotelli for Lambert and Mignolet then pulled off a fine diving save to keep out a Clayton shot that that looked bound for the net.
Boro sensed the upset was on and Clayton almost sealed it with five minutes of normal time remaining when he latched on to a superb pass from Tomlin and shot against the woodwork.
At the other end, Balotelli scuffed wide as he lost his footing, and the hosts' penalty cries went unheeded once again in stoppage time as Boro's former Liverpool defender Daniel Ayala appeared to handle while trying to clear a cross.
The Reds showed little conviction with their finishing in extra-time until the ball broke to Suso - who had come on for Markovic - from a goalmouth scramble and the Spaniard slotted in.
Liverpool looked to be almost over the line, but Boro were not finished and they found themselves back in the game at the death when Bamford, clumsily brought down by Toure, put away the resulting penalty.
That set up a shoot-out which will stay in the memory - but will not be remembered with any fondness by Adomah.

And the Most investigated Nigerian Award Goes To ? – Atiku

Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar has debunked claims that he is corrupt, describing such perception as erroneous, mischievous and misleading, adding that he is the most investigated Nigerian.
“I have not been convicted of any corrupt practice,” he stated emphatically.
Atiku, at a media interaction yesterday in Lagos, stressed, “I am not corrupt,” in response to newsmen, who asked him: “Are you corrupt?”
The former vice president added that though “I am the most investigated Nigerian,” nothing incriminating had been established against him after all the probes and investigations.
He, however, said with his political experience, exposure, electoral value and economic acumen, he was the most qualified politician in the country today to serve as president.
He insisted that “our administration established various agencies to deal with the issue of corruption, we charged people for corruption more than other administrations in this country.”
According to him, the administration he served “wanted a more effective Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) than the one approved by the National Assembly,” asserting that “no administration has done more than what we did.”
Atiku, who will officially declare his ambition to serve the country as president on the ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) tomorrow, told journalists that he would run a corruption-free economy, pledging that the issue of corruption would be dealt with decisively the way it had not been done before.  The welfare of the citizenry, he added, would be guaranteed during his administration.  He said if he could run his business successfully all these years, to replicate that at the national level as president would be an easy task. If voted as president, he promised, his government would focus on mass employment that would banish poverty, suffering and hardship in the land.
“This is a new Atiku with new direction that will lead the country to a better tomorrow, create an environment to create jobs,” he promised, pointing out that a “good government should be able to come up with policies to create jobs through the private sector.”
On how he would contend with the issue of power of incumbency, the APC presidential aspirant boasted: “If we could fight the military with the media partnership to a standstill to enthrone democracy, we are capable to defeat the incumbent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” adding: “We do not need to give up because somebody is there.” Insisting that the task of effecting the needed change in the country must be accomplished, Atiku stated that change was required to formulate new policies and bring about a restructuring that would deepen democracy. He said there was need for change in the police structure to accommodate state police, and reform in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), among other agencies for effective governance.
When newsmen suggested that Adamawa governorship by-election would be a litmus test for his presidential ambition, Atiku asked rhetorically, “Did former President Olusegun Obasanjo win his state before winning a presidential election?” Going down memory lane, the former vice president noted that General Muhammadu Buhari had never delivered his Katsina State, just as he reminded newsmen that several presidents of the United States of America (USA) did not win their states before becoming the number one citizen of their country.

Bombshell : I shared Abacha’s bribe to Yoruba monarchs!............................Oba of lagos

Oba of Lagos, His Royal Highness Rilwan Akiolu, has opened up on the role he played in the alleged bribery of some Yoruba monarchs by late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, to frustrate the struggle against the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election believed to have been won by late business mogul, Chief MKO Abiola.
The monarch, who was the Lagos State Police Commissioner at the time, said that with the exception of one or two traditional rulers, other prominent Yoruba Obas collected bribe from the Abacha administration, declaring that he personally shared the money to the monarchs.
The monarch said the traditional rulers collected the bribe from Abacha to assist the late Head of State to remain in office following the relentless protests that trailed his coming to power.
He hinted that he has the names of the monarchs and the role they played, especially the Yoruba traditional rulers and vowed to expose them after the 2015 general elections.
Oba Akiolu stated this on Sunday in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State during the visit of the Emir of Kano and former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Muhammed Sanusi II to the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona at his palace.
He was part of Emir Sanusi’s entourage to Ijebu-Ode after the latter had visited him at his Iga Idunganran Palace in Lagos on Saturday.
Delivering his speech at the palace, Oba Akiolu disclosed that he had spoken with President Goodluck Jonathan to forgive and forget the errors that Mallam Sanusi might have committed as CBN governor, adding that all humans are prone to errors.
He said: “The Awujale is not part of them (corrupt monarchs), when the time comes, I am going to expose those monarchs who were given bribes in order to aid the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha to remain in power.
“I was a Commissioner of Police then in Lagos; I was at the meeting where money was being shared to the monarchs; I know those that collected money. I was given the share of Awujale to send it across to him, but I told them, right there that he will never collect the money and truly, when he was approached, he rejected it.
“There are some monarchs that I personally gave their own share and they collected it from me. I have their names and when the time comes, I will expose them. I am not afraid of anybody, they are corrupt and those are some of the bad eggs in the traditional institution. These are the people, you (Emir of Kano) should be very careful of associating with”, Oba Akiolu stated.
He advised the Emir not to look down on his subjects, as they were the main source of his traditional power.
It will be recalled that former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Bola Tinubu had during the 80th birthday of the Awujale last May took a swipe at Yoruba Obas saying that most of them soiled their hands during Abacha’s regime.
Earlier in his welcome address, Oba Adetona applauded the contributions of the Emir to the economy of this country when he was the governor at the apex bank.
Among dignitaries at the palace to join the monarch to receive his guests were the former governor of the state, who is also the Aremo of Ijebuland, Chief Olusegun Osoba, Senator Adegbenga Kaka, the three state commissioners from Ijebu Ode: Otunba Bimbo Ashiru (Commerce and Industry), Adebayo Fari  (Forestry) and Olugbenga Otenuga (Physical and Urban Planning).
Also present were members of the state Council of Obas and Ijebu chiefs, religious leaders, the Hausa community in Ijebuland.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Ibikunle Amosun, Bimbo Ashiru congratulated the two distinguished Nigerians, who, he described as shinning lights in the traditional institution in the country.
Amosun charged the monarchs to continue to support the government in their various domains, adding that, being the custodians of both the traditional and culture of the people, the onus lies on them to play very good advisory roles to all tiers government.
Mallam Sanusi explained that he decided to visit the two Obas in the South West because they were the only ones who identified with him during his coronation as the new Emir of Kano, adding that they were his adopted fathers.

Why PDP Endorsed Jonathan Sole Presidential Candidate

It has emerged that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan as the sole presidential candidate of the party because of the desire to exempt a sitting president who is eligible for a second term and is deemed to have performed “creditably” from re-contesting for the ticket of the party in a primary election.
This, among other reasons, was what informed the decision taken by the different organs of the PDP when they unanimously endorsed Jonathan as the sole presidential candidate of the party for the 2015 general election.
Party sources, who provided clarification on the issue, said following the endorsement of Jonathan, which shall be ratified at the National Convention on December 6, the PDP has decided to make it the norm by automatically endorsing a sitting president as is the case in other countries such as the United States of America, where the presidential system of government is in practice.
Last week, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who gave some insight into why the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) supported the position of the PDP Governors’ Forum in endorsing Jonathan, said it was aimed at maintaining the democratic norms in endorsing all presidents and prime ministers that have performed creditably in office.
Ekweremadu had explained: “We are borrowing from other democracies, including the United States of America, where a sitting president, who has done so well is expected to be rewarded by his party with a ticket.
“So we are building a tradition which we hope that those who will come after us will be able to imbibe. This is also within the tenets of democracy, not only in Nigeria but in other parts of the world.”
Other reasons advanced by party sources include the fact that PDP chieftains wanted to avoid the huge costs associated with the conduct of a fresh presidential primary both for the aspirants and the sitting president who would already have an undue advantage over other contestants.
A party source explained that it would be cheaper to channel resources to the presidential campaign and the election proper instead of wasting them on a primary that consumes considerable time, energy and resources.
Also, the endorsement of the president was seen as a clear way to stem divisions within the party as was the case after the 2011 presidential primary when former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, who had emerged the consensus candidate of the North, lost out to Jonathan.
After his defeat at the 2011 PDP presidential primary, Atiku refused to concede defeat and did not congratulate Jonathan after his victory at the primary.
This, a party source explained, caused divisions and raised suspicions among party members.
“The 2011 presidential election caused a division between the supporters of President Jonathan and that of the former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar,” the source said, adding that had it not been for the tactical manner the division was managed, it could have caused problems for the party.
“This is not the case with most advanced nations where the losers in a presidential election immediately concede defeat and congratulate the winner.
“We could even have instances where some losers could end up working for the opposition during the election proper in order to settle scores,” the source added.
On why PDP did not extend the sole candidacy to governors that have performed creditably, the PDP source said it is in the pipeline, but added that this was certainly not the time for it.
“It is under consideration for future elections but not for the 2015 election,” he said.
He explained that a committee had been set up to extend similar automatic tickets to the governors of the party, who had performed creditably in the future, but said there was no urgency now because only two PDP governors – Gombe and Kaduna – would be seeking re-election in February 2015.
All others, except Bayelsa and Kogi, he said, would be concluding their second terms come May 2015, making them ineligible to contest next year.
Meanwhile, the PDP yesterday was forced to retract its statement on Vice-President Namadi Sambo, stating that it had an implicit satisfaction in the working relationship between the president and his deputy.
On Sunday, the party had cast a cloud of uncertainty over the vice-president re-contesting next year’s election when it stated that Sambo’s chances of becoming Jonathan’s running mate in the 2015 presidential election were dependent on the president.
However, the party said yesterday that Sambo was part of the winning team in which it has overwhelming confidence.
A statement by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, said: “PDP has overwhelming confidence in a winning team that has demonstrably transformed Nigeria in less than four years, despite challenges.”
Surprisingly, the party blamed the media for trying to create a rift between Jonathan and Sambo, adding: “There is no doubt whatsoever that the vice-president has the implicit confidence of the president. The PDP is therefore very pleased that they are working together in actualising the transformation agenda to the popular acclaim of both Nigerians and the international community.
“We wish to place on record as well that the 66th NEC (National Executive Committee) meeting of our great party, which endorsed President Jonathan as the sole candidate of the PDP for the 2015 general election, responsibly reasoned and this decision on the outstanding performance of the Jonathan presidency of which Vice-President Sambo is an integral part of.
“This motion which was unanimously endorsed by NEC left no room for any form of speculation, as Senator Jim Nwobodo, who seconded it, expressly commended both the president and his deputy for lifting the banner of the PDP very high, while praying the NEC to approve the motion.”
The party added that its statement was to clarify obvious misinterpretations arising from its position at a press conference Sunday, where it averred that the president was yet to accept the sole presidential candidacy offered by the NEC of the party.

Outrage grows over $9.3m seized in South Africa

There was more outrage yesterday over the smuggling of $9.3million from Nigeria into South Africa purportedly to buy arms.

Islamic body Jama’atu Nasir Islam (JNI) expressed disbelief that such a mission was undertaken ostensibly on behalf of government.

Senate Minority Leader Geroge Akume expressed “utmost dismay and anger” over the matter. He criticised Christian Association of Nigerian (CAN) President Ayo Oritsejafor for his role in the matter.

The CAN leader has admitted having a “residual interest” in Eagle Airline Limited, owners of the Bombadier jet to ferry the cash from Abuja to Johannesburg on September 5”.

He, however, said the plan had been leased to another company since August. The company gave the plane  out on charter.

Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) expressed disbelief over the impounding of the jet in South Africa, laden with $9.3 million in cash, purportedly to buy arms in the country, saying that the matter became more of concern to JNI because the government has full knowledge of it, despite its illegality.

A statement by JNI Secretary General, Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu in Kaduna yesterday said: “Government should tell Nigerians the real fact on the issue. We hope the matter will not be wheedled with. However, we note with dismay the unguarded utterances of some leaders that they will call on their followers to defend themselves.

“Also we note the uncourteous speeches attacking other leaders, which leave much to be desired and overheat the polity.

“JNI demands answers to why were the presidential fleet of jets not used? Is government short of official agents which necessitated assigning non official ones? With the current trend of cashless financial transaction, why is such huge amount carried in cash? And isn’t arms deals executed via third parties?

“Where is the Ministry of Defence and the office of the National Security Adviser? Was due process followed through relevant government agencies? And are bilateral matters dealt with in that way?”

The apex Islamic body in the North also urged Senators and Reps to rise initiate a special discussion on the matter, which according to it, as urgent public interest revolves on it, as it relates to threat to national security.

“The EFCC must wholly play its role in this direction by prosecuting those involved to adequately face the wrath of the law. It doesn’t matter whose ox is gored.

“We are in support of any move to restore peace and security and we will not waiver. We commend the efforts of security agents in the fight against terrorism and the successes so far achieved,” the statement added.

Akume statement said the circumstances surrounding the incident suggested that those ferrying the money did it in open breach of Nigerian and international laws.

“South Africa has already established a prima facie case of criminality involved in the questionable misadventure.”

Pastor Oritsejafor’s arguments are unsustainable because he has vicarious liability at several levels. One, the vessel used for criminal activity belongs to him. Secondly, he commercially leased the vessel to Eagle Air, which is a company he holds an interest in and which in turn further leased same to the company that converted it to commercial use with his full knowledge and approval. The chain of ethical liability is unbroken. How will the pastor explain his involvement with people engaged in the murky waters of international arms trafficking?”

“The President of CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, claimed that his congregation donated this same jet to him on the 40th anniversary of his ministry sometime in 2012 for the purpose of attending to his flock and doing God’s work. The plane, a Bombardier Challenger 600, was registered as a privately owned jet supposedly for pastoral use. However, the three passengers arrested in South Africa with the aircraft were definitely not on pastoral visit to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“Unfortunately, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has jumped into this fray, hurling insults on respectable members of the society and making statements that are more political than spiritual. I wish to remind officials of CAN that when on 27th August, 1976, Christian leaders first met at the Catholic secretariat, Lagos, they agreed to establish an organisation that would promote cooperation among Christians, interfaith harmony and safeguard the welfare of all Nigerians. When CAN was eventually registered in 1986, its constitution clearly articulated among other objectives to act as ‘watchperson of the spiritual and moral welfare of the Nation’. Another core objective is to promote understanding, peace and unity among the various people of Nigeria.

From the pioneer president of CAN His Eminence Dominic Cardinal Ekannem through his revered successors like His Eminence Anthony Cardinal Okogie, Dr. Sunday Mbang, Most Rev. Peter Akinola and the immediate past President of CAN and Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, His Eminence John Cardinal Onaiyekan, CAN witnessed its glorious years.

“My appeal to Pastor Oritsejafor is that as a Christian leader, his beacon should be Jesus the Christ. “

“I advise him to sell this controversial jet and use the funds to reconstruct or rehabilitate churches destroyed by Boko Haram in the northeast of Nigeria. This advice is especially apt now that the Pastor no longer needs the plane for pastoral duties,” Akume said.

ISIS hostage executioner, IDENTIFIED!

Washington (AFP) - The United States has identified the masked Islamic State militant who murdered two kidnapped American journalists in separate videotaped beheadings, FBI chief James Comey said Thursday.
The jihadist organization triggered global outrage when it released videos of a man with a British accent killing first James Foley then Steven Sotloff, freelance journalists who were kidnapped in Syria.
"We believe we have identified the executioner," Comey told reporters at a briefing in Washington. "I won't tell you who it is."
The British ambassador in Washington, Sir Peter Westmacott, had previously said that the allies were close to identifying the suspect.
Comey did not confirm or deny reports that the suspect in the killing is British, but said the FBI was concerned that another film from the Islamic State group features someone with a North American accent.
"Flames of War" -- a slickly produced propaganda video aimed at intimidating Western audiences and recruiting English-speaking fighters -- was released earlier this month.
It features a masked militant in combat fatigues speaking in English.
"There's no doubt that there's someone speaking with a North American-accented English on that video, so that's a big focus of ours right now," Comey said.
In addition to murdering two US hostages and a Briton, the Islamic State group has seized a large tract of territory spanning eastern Syria and northwestern Iraq, in a brutal and bloody campaign.
On August 8, President Barack Obama ordered air strikes against the group in Iraq, and this week expanded the campaign -- backed by Arab allies -- to hit IS targets across the border in Syria.
US authorities expect a long conflict against the group of at least three years, and have expressed
concerns that hundreds of Muslims from Europe or the Americas have joined the group.
There are fears in Western capitals that battle-hardened fighters may return from the field and launch attacks in their homelands.

Confusion over Shekau’s Death !

Nigeria and Cameroon were, yesterday, locked in an argument over who killed Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau and where he was killed.

In a rare public show by the Cameroonian army (Armee Camerounaise), photos of Shekau were made public alongside a statement claiming he was killed during a cross-border raid deep inside Nigeria by its military.

A Cameroon military source, according to Cameroon Concord, said on Sunday night that Shekau was killed following an aerial bombardment of his hideout inside Nigeria.

On the other hand, the Nigerian Army is also laying claim to the same feat but without photographic evidence yet. The Nigerian Army said its soldiers might have killed Shekau in Konduga, a town some kilometres away from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

According to a report posted on its twitter handle, DHQ said yesterday that, “there was no raid whatsoever in any part of Nigeria’s territory in pursuit of terrorists as claimed in some reports allegedly quoting Cameroon military authorities.

“All operations on-going in the environs of Konduga and all associated border locations within the country are completely being undertaken by Nigerian troops.”

Reportedly, the Cameroon armed forces since Sunday have been in serious combat against thousands of Boko Haram fighters trying to enter Cameroon via Fotokol from Gamboru Ngala in Nigeria.

This came amid confusion over Shekau’s identity as military experts are trying to ascertain whether the dead ‘Shekau’ was Isa Damsaka or Bashir Mohammed, who are both top commanders believed to be posing as Shekau.

Meanwhile, efforts to exchange some of the abducted Chibok school girls with Boko Haram prisoners have flopped again.

The Nigerian military claimed that its troops might have killed Shekau on September 17 during a desperate attempt by the sect to capture Konduga as part of their plot to eventually march on and capture Maiduguri.

“It is getting more certain that the terrorist commander who has been mimicking Shekau in those videos is the one killed in Konduga on September 17, 2014, the military revealed.

The military, however, cautioned that “the process of confirming the dead body we have is the same as that character who has been posing as Shekau is ongoing. He is definitely a prominent terrorist commander. I don’t want to say anything about this yet, please.”

The military source insisted that the resemblance between Shekau and the corpse in their custody is too striking to be a coincidence. They cited his facial marks, beard and teeth in addition to the recovery by  Nigerian troops of some of the armoured vehicles and Hilux SUVs that had featured in previous videos of the prime suspect. The source assured that the Defence Headquarters will soon address the nation after full investigation of their latest discovery.

The counter-claims by both countries have raised some posers: Who actually killed Shekau and where was he killed and how authentic are the claims?

Confusion over Shekau’s identity

Indeed, confusion reigns supreme over Shekau’s identity. Strident efforts by the Nigerian military high command to establish the true identity of the top Boko Haram leader who was shot dead last week, continued in earnest yesterday, even as the video of the slain man was obtained exclusively by Vanguard.

The military, it was learnt, had been cautious in making a formal announcement that Shekau had been killed as a similar declaration last year, was instantly countered by the sect, following the emergence of another ‘Shekau’ in several video posts on the Internet.

Vanguard gathered from top security sources that although a bearded man, who resembled Shekau in several material details, was shot dead in Konduga last week, the military was not sure whether the slain man was Isa Damsaka or Bashir Mohammed, who the security agencies claim had been mimicking the real Abubakar Shekau, said to have been killed since June 2013.

The apparent fear over the death of Shekau, in the battle for Konduga, it was also learnt, has caused some disquiet in the Boko Haram camp, especially as the video of the dead commander surfaced on the internet yesterday.

In the six-second video, the critically wounded ‘Shekau’ was seen lying on the ground writhing in pains as men in military uniform and civilians surround him with some voices saying, “Waste that man! Waste that man!”

However, the Australian negotiator, Dr. Stephen Davis, who claims to have worked closely with Abubakar Shekau, said yesterday that he was convinced that the real Shekau was killed since June 2013 by the Nigerian security agencies.

Shekau killed June 2013 — Davis

Davis, in a mail to Vanguard, said that Abubakar Shekau was killed around June 19, 2013 while they were close to concluding a peace deal on the Boko Haram insurgency.

Davis said:  “I continue to hold to the position that Shekau was killed on or about June 19, 2013 when we were close to concluding a peace deal. Videos immediately prior to that time were produced using a “fake” Shekau. The fake Skekau is Isa Damsaka. It was confirmed to me by Boko Haram that he was killed in the recent military engagement at Konduga.

“Most members of Boko Haram have never seen Shekau. They believe what they have been told that Shekau is their leader. The real Shekau is dead. The Shekau the world has been seeing in videos is a “fake” and Boko Haram fighters have been fooled. They have followed blindly.

“The message of Boko Haram purifying Islam is also fake. When the Boko Haram leaders broke the news of Shekau’s death in June last year, they said he had diverted from the Holy Qu’ran through the kidnappings, rapes and beheadings. The fake Shekau continued these atrocities under the patronage of the sponsors and escalated their terrorist activities. Shekau is dead but they will try to find another to perpetuate the lie.

“This is the time for Boko Haram commanders to come forward and release the captive girls. There are Chibok girls and many other girls who have been kidnapped. Let commanders come forward and release a large number of girls as a first step towards a peace dialogue.

“I have no doubt the sponsors will try to prevent any commander releasing the girls as part of a peace deal. The pressure must therefore be put on the sponsors so the commanders can come forward.

“Shekau was killed on or about June 19, 2013 as we were concluding a peace deal. I have spoken at length to several senior people who were present. The Shekau impersonator recently killed was Isa Damsaka. Boko Haram leaders have been using him for quite some time to make their propaganda videos. The script is written for him by another commander which he then reads as he delivers his message on-camera.”

How  Shekau was killed

Details of how Abubakar Shekau, the impostor and leader of the Boko Haram terrorist group was killed in a shoot-out with Nigerian troops in Konduga on Wednesday, September 17 emerged, yesterday, with military sources disclosing that he met his waterloo in an ambush reminiscent of the type the sect had been using to hack down Nigerian troops.

Vanguard gathered that during the first attack on Konduga, where hundreds of insurgents were taken unawares and killed after over seven hours of fighting with several of their colleagues, arms and ammunition captured, the military commanders strategically urged his captured members to send a message to Shekau that they (insurgents) have killed the troops.

Before the captured insurgents were urged to make the contact and deliver the message, the military commanders had promised them that their co-operation would play a role in the level of punishment to be meted to them after the battle, hence they felt reassured.

Also, the captured insurgents had disclosed that Shekau usually moved in a convoy of cars painted in military colours while he sits in a MOWAG Armoured tank with Boko Haram inscription on its front.

When Shekau was contacted, his captured men spoke to him in Arabic, assuring him that they had taken over Konduga, thereby giving him the positive signal to proceed from Sambisa Forest. To convince him further, some of his men that were captured were asked to sing the victory song in Kanuri language they normally sing at the background.

Having convinced himself that the messenger was his chief courier in such situation and the message was authentic, he and his followers made for Konduga, heavily armed with anti-aircraft weapons, general purpose machine guns, several AK-47 rifles and other IEDS’.

However, on entering Konduga town, he and his followers were encircled by strategically placed and heavily armed Nigerian soldiers. Immediately he contacted the messenger and discovered that something was amiss, he ordered his followers to start shooting in all directions.

This spurred the Army Commanders to give the directive to open fire. When he discovered that the fire power of the Nigerian Army who used both infantry and artillery weaponry was overwhelming, he jumped out of the MOWAG and made to escape.

But Nigerian soldiers spotted him and opened fire on him, inflicting serious injuries on  his legs. It was learnt that he also received bullet wounds in other parts of his body as he was said to have bled to death.

Military sources had on Sunday night disclosed that Nigerian troops scored a strategic victory in the current battle against terrorists operating in the North-East on September 17.

Swap of Chibok girls with Boko Haram prisoners flops again

Meanwhile, it has also emerged that efforts of the security agencies to free the 219 Chibok girls from their Boko Haram captors has failed again.

Vanguard learnt from top security agents that the deal to free the girls, who have spent 162 days with their abductors, had broken down almost irretrievably as a result of the inexplicable decision by the Boko Haram side to ask for impossible conditions.

One of the conditions put down by Boko Haram at the last minute was that the Federal Government must account for and produce 18 of its top commanders said to have been captured and detained in several detention facilities across the country.

Although the government was willing to free some of the Boko Haram detainees in exchange for the girls, a top government source, who was privy to the discussions, said that many of the Boko Haram commanders could not be traced.

The top government official said: “Boko Haram commanders suddenly demanded an equal man-to-man exchange instead of the agreed total girls for 16 Boko Haram prisoners. Also, of the 16 prisoners, not all of them could be traced by the government side.

“The exchange of the Chibok girls with the Boko Haram prisoners was to take place at an agreed location in Yola, the Adamawa State capital. But the true position of things as of today is that the talks have broken down.”

Answering a question, the government official said that Nigeria opted to bring in the International Committee of the Red Cross as a facilitator because of its neutrality and competence in facilitating such exchange of prisoners in many parts of the world.

South Africa not a threat to Nigeria- Eguavoen

Former Super Eagles player and Coach, Austin Cerezo Eguavoen has dismissed talks about South Africa posing a threat to Nigeria in the 2015 African Nations Cup qualifiers. Nigeria will tomorrow in Cape Town play against South Africa for their second game of the qualifying series, looking to continue with their dominance over the Bafana Bafana. Eguavoen believes that the Super Eagles have enough in their armoury to see out the South Africans, adding that their level of confidence will help them win the game. “When you are a champion, people will always try to pull you down but I am not too worried because we are blessed with talent and we have done it before so I am confident that we will do it again. A team must know its strength and weaknesses but winning games would give the team confidence”The former national team handler told footballlive.ng Nigeria lost their last game against Congo, and would be hoping to get a win against South Africa to put them back in contention to qualify for the 2015 Nations Cup in South Africa.

“It won’t be an easy walk in the park” – South Africa coach warns Super Eagles

South Africa on the other hand, are not exactly brimming with confidence despite defeating Sudan 3-0 in Khartoum in their first match of the AFCON qualifying series.

“This Nigeria team has been giving us nightmares, but we will fight in every game”, Mashaba admitted.

“When two Elephants meet, it is grass that suffers. Watch out, brace yourself for war that day [when Mashaba meets Keshi], because, like I have indicated earlier on, they [Nigeria], have given us sleepless nights.”

Nigeria have maintained an edge over their opponents for a long time and Mashaba feels a win on Wednesday, will change a lot of things.

“This is one time they must brace themselves for war up to the fullest, it won’t be an easy walk in the park for both teams, but what we are looking for is to come out victorious and that win will change a lot of things in our football, both in administration, media wise, any structure that you talk about,” Mashaba added. We win that game [and] things will change for the better.

AFCON QUALIFIER: We’ll beat Super Eagles – South Africa

Following a resounding 3-0 win over Sudan in Khartoum on Friday in their 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualification match, midfielder Sibusiso Vilakazi says Bafana Bafana must not become complacent when they face Nigeria in Cape Town on Wednesday, SPORT24 reports. The Super Eagles fell to a 3-2 loss to Congo in their opening qualifier match on Saturday, and Vilakazi was optimistic his side could get a win at home. “We know our history against Nigeria but we are determined to change all that. History is always there to be rewritten and I am confident that come on Wednesday, we will put smiles on most South Africans faces.” He added, “We just need to keep our feet grounded and the rest will follow. The players know what it means to represent one’s country. They know that behind their backs that they are carrying the hopes of 52 million people.” Vilakazi said a more committed mental approach was one of the reasons behind Bafana’s resounding victory over Sudan . Vilakazi came on as a substitute in the second half and scored the first two goals for South Africa as they surged ahead, but warned the focus should be on their second qualifier match against Nigeria in Cape Town on Wednesday. “That is one philosophy coach Shakes Mashaba has been drumming home now and again and I am seeing the attitude of players has tremendously changed. “They are prepared to die for a just cause, work for each other and want to bring pride and happiness to the country. That is the type of task any responsible citizen needs to carry to make a difference in society.” Captain Senzo Meyiwa said with the type of atmosphere in the Bafana camp, the Eagles would face a stiff opposition. “Yes, they say in soccer certain teams have their hoodoo side but we are ready for the Nigeria match,” said Meyiwa. “We are all determined to change the course of history and everyone cannot wait for Wednesday.”

Jonathan is afraid of Boko Haram: David-West

A former Minister of Petroleum, Prof Tam David-West, has berated President Goodluck Jonathan for failing to address the security situation in the country.

David-West said he was convinced that the President was afraid of Boko Haram that was why he (Jonathan) refused to visit the parents of the schoolgirls that were kidnapped in Chibok, Borno State over four months ago.

David-West said it was wrong of Jonathan to have invited the parents of the Chibok girls to Abuja instead of going to Chibok to visit them, adding that going to visit them would have given both the parents and Nigerians a psychological boost.

The former minister said this during an interview with Sahara TV, which was monitored by our correspondent.

He said Jonathan had no right to seek a second term in office and urged Nigerians to rise against bad governance. He said it was unfortunate that more Nigerians were being abducted by terrorists.

He described as shocking, the takeover of several towns by Boko Haram members.

He said, “Anyone that is complacent about the state of affairs in the country is an enemy of Nigeria. It is a terrible situation and we should be ashamed, President Jonathan should be ashamed. He is the Commander-in-Chief and the number one security officer and citizen of the state.

“Over 200 of your girls taken away from your territory for the past three months and you are still talking. First, you are not even sure, his wife said nothing happened, then he also did not believe that anything happened and later he changed and said he knows where they are. If you say you know where they are, why can’t you save them?

“With all the security forces in the country, you cannot bring them. Our President is afraid of Boko Haram. He claimed they have infiltrated his cabinet and isn’t he ashamed? Since you know they have infiltrated your cabinet, why don’t you expose them?

“Up till now, he has not gone to Chibok and when he made that cosmetic move to see them, he invited the parents to come to Abuja and when they were going, he gave them money which has now been exposed and that is why Boko Haram has been so because they know that the President is weak.”

David-West said even though he is Jonathan’s kinsman, he would not turn a blind eye to the incompetence of his administration.

Jonathan’s campaign strategy mocks Chibok girls’ parents.

The#BringBackOur Girls (BBOG) protesters have said President Goodluck Jonathan’s new campaign slogan, #BringBackGoodluck2015, does not only show his inhumanity, but also mocks the grieving Chibok girls’ parents.

They said it was unfair for the President to mock the parents “because he does not know what will happen to him tomorrow.”

The protesters said government tried to stop their advocacy through intimidation, “which will not work because we shall stand firm until the schoolgirls, who were abducted 146 days ago at the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok are rescued.”

The group’s leader, Aisha Yusufu, spoke yesterday in Abuja during a protest.

She said although the nation was at ‘war’ with the Boko Haram insurgents in the Northeast, the President did not deem it fit to address the citizens over the ‘war’.

Her words: “I think their plan is to mock us, to mock the campaign. But the only thing they have succeeded in doing is to show their inhumanity. They don’t have a sense of empathy.

“This is a campaign for people in pains. No matter how highly-placed, how important somebody is, you are not above God. Anything can happen to you. We don’t know what can happen tomorrow. Those who are laughing at somebody grieving today do not know what will be their portion tomorrow. Only God knows tomorrow. This is why you should never mock another person.

“We were supposed to meet at the Unity Fountain, but we changed our venue at the last minute for security reason.

“This intimidation will not stop us. We will not give up. We will not stop until the girls are rescued.”

Adamawa Guber: Atiku Moves To Displace PDP

Following the crisis currently rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State, former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has begun moves to capture his home state for his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the governorship election billed to hold next month.

LEADERSHIP Friday gathered that Atiku is banking strongly on his growing profile as the undisputed leader of the APC in the state which has blossomed with the impeachment of former Governor Murtala Nyako and the defection of the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Malam Nuhu Ribadu to the PDP last Saturday to test his political might in the forthcoming governorship by-election in the state.

A source close to the state chapter of the APC told our correspondent that the party leaders have turned to Atiku for direction in the battle to capture Adamawa by ensuring the choice of a formidable candidate who would take advantage of the confusion created by the defection of Ribadu to the PDP.
He said the crisis generated by te alleged bid by the national chairman of the PDP, Adamu Mu’azu and the principal personal secretary to the president, Hassan Tukur to impose Ribadu on the party as its candidate for the October 11 governorship poll, some elders in the state have approached Atiku to lead the way and give a sense of belonging to the generality of the people of the state to ensure equity and fair play.

The source said the former VP has cashed in on the crisis rocking the PDP in the state and is believed to have thrown his weight behind Barrister Boss Mustapha, a Christian from Kilba ethnic group for the governorship race. It was further gathered that Atiku’s resolve to support Mustapha is based on the request of some Christian leaders who met and pleaded with him to give them a Christian candidate as a form of compensation.

           "No," Williams answers evenly.

When Iyanla asks Williams about using protection during sex, he insists that he did.

Harrysong ! Counting his blessings

Five star music artist, Harrysong has said he’s been counting his blessings since he released his hit single ”Beta Pikin”. He revealed this in a recent interview with Encomium Magazine where he explained how successful the single has been. Read excerpts from the interview below;

How are you basking in the success of your song Beta Pikin?

Beta Pikin is a blessing. Beta Pikin took like six months ‎to blow, we did a lot of push and work, so I think that’s why it’s staying this long and it’s working for me. I’m enjoying it.

Did you ever imagine it will go this far?
No, we were working and hoping to get to the level of acceptance, love and success. Where we can smile and also pay off, and suddenly things started turning for good which I think it’s time for me.

How financially rewarding is the song for you?
Beta Pikin is a billion naira stuff. If I was to put together the estimate, I cannot even count, because it’s bought me different properties, it’s bought me house, cars and so many other things.

Learnt that you just acquired a brand new SUV, how did it happen?
Correct! I went to America. I went to Boston, I went for shopping for just sneakers and belts and I saw the car at the mall and they approached me and it’s a beautiful car and I paid for the car.

Did you ever imagine it will go this far?
No, we were working and hoping to get to the level of acceptance, love and success. Where we can smile and also pay off, and suddenly things started turning for good which I think it’s time for me.

Man divorces wife because of too much sex

We’ve heard of people divorcing over a sexless marriage, but divorcing over too much sex? You don’t hear that one every day. Apparently, one man was recently granted a divorce by a Mumbai family court because he could no longer deal with his wife’s “excessive and insatiable desire for sex.” According to The Times Of India, the sex-fatigued husband first approached the court in January, claiming that his wife was “aggressive, stubborn and autocratic” and that she’d be harassing him for sex since they married in April 2012. The man told the court his wife forced medication on him to boast his sexual stamina and threatened to hook up with other men if she remained unfulfilled. Things got so bad, the husband had to be hospitalized for an uneasy stomach at one point. In the end, the wife failed to appear before the court, so the divorce was granted. (Meanwhile, we couldn’t be happier for the poor, put-upon husband. May he go on to have as little — or as much — non-chore-like, consensual sex as he’d like.) -HuffingtonPost

The Federal Government has directed all public and private primary and secondary schools to reopen on Monday, September 22, 2014.
The Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, who said this on Friday in Abuja while briefing newsmen after an emergency meeting with State Commissioners for Education, stated that preliminary measures put in place to curb the spread of Ebola Virus Disease is still intact.
Shekarau said that any State Ministry of Education that had not appointed designated desk officers on Ebola information should do so urgently before the resumption date. He urged state governments to support their state Ministries of Education with all necessary funds to ensure effective implementation of the preventive measures.
The minister said, “We have now agreed that primary and secondary schools both public and private will reopen and begin formal classes on Monday, 22 September 2014. While this is in place, we have decided to continue the preventive measure.
“All primary and secondary schools, both public and private should be provided with a minimum of two blood pressure measuring equipment by the State Ministries of Education. The state ministries should determine the number of such equipment required and forward same to the Federal Ministry of Education.
“The Federal Ministry of Education will liaise with the Federal Ministry of Health to ensure that appropriate equipment is procured. Those states that have not complied with this agreement should please do so.
“State governments are called upon to support their state Ministries of Education with all necessary funds to ensure effective implementation of these preventive measures. Regular washing of the hands is part of the preventive measures. There must be steady supply of water in schools. All states should ensure that this is put in place as the schools reopen.”
Shekarau urged all state Ministries of Education to establish a working and monitoring team for effective supervision of school activities before and after opening of schools.
According to him, each state Ministry of Education should appoint a designated desk officer who should also receive appropriate training and who must report on daily basis to the commissioner on situation in the schools.
“The names of such desk officers, their phone numbers and e-mail addresses should be communicated to the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Education,” he added.
The meeting was also attended by senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Health.

Red Devils Roast Super Eagles, AFCON Qualifiers

Reigning African champions Nigeria began its 2015 Cup of African Nations qualifying campaign on a low following a shock 3-2 loss to Congo at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
The Super Eagles were the better side in the opening exchanges and duly took the lead in the 14th minute through defender Efe Ambrose, who headed in fellow defender Elderson Echiejile’s ball.
The lead was however shortlived as the Congolese levelled three minutes later through Prince Oniangue, before going on to silence the Calabar crowd just before half-time when Thiery Bifouma put the visitors ahead.
Bifouma was on hand to extend Congo’s lead 10 minutes into the second half, converting a penalty earned after Echiejile brought him down in the area.
Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi saw an effort flash just wide of the Congo goal moments later as the Super Eagles desperately sought to find a way back.
Substitute Nosa Igiebor summed up the day for the Eagles with seven minutes to go, when he scooped an effort over the Congo goal from just three yards out after being teed up by fellow substitute Emmanuel Emenike.
Another substitute Gbolahan Salami however pulled a goal back for Nigeria in stoppage time with a close range effort, but it proved a consolation as Congo held on to claim three crucial points and inflict a first competitive home loss in 33 years on Nigeria .
The result sees Congo occupy second spot in Group A after the opening round of matches, with South Africa on top courtesy of a better goal difference after the Bafana Bafana got a 3-0 win over Sudan on Friday.
For Nigeria, the result compounds the crisis in which the country’s football finds itself, with a FIFA suspension hanging over the Nigeria Football Federation unless the NFF meets FIFA’s ultimatum for Chris Giwa to step down as NFF President.
Meanwhile in some other qualifying matches played today, Cameroun won 2-0 at DR Congo to top Group D ahead of Cote D’Ivoire that came from behind to claim a 2-1 win over Sierra Leone in Abidjan.
The Black Stars of Ghana were held to a shock 1-1 by the Cranes of Uganda in Group E while Algeria’s Desert Foxes edged Ethiopia 2-1 in a Group B match played in Addis Ababa.
Surprise package at AFCON 2013, Cape Verde eased to a 3-1 win at Niger, a result that sent the island nation top of Group F following the goalless draw between Zambia and Mozambique in the other group match.
AFCON 2013 finalists Burkina Faso began its qualifying campaign in Group C with a 2-0 win at home to Lesotho while Gabon got a lone goal win at home to Angola in the other group match in Libreville.

Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, said on Saturday that the team’s loss to the Congolese national team will serve as a wakeup call to his players. Keshi spoke to sport writers in Calabar shortly after Nigeria lost by 3-2 to Congo in Africa Nations cup qualifying match. “Its a shame that we had opportunities and we could not score, mostly in the second half. “In the first half, they were winning by 2-1, its part of the game. Maybe it will be a good lesson for the players, may be too much confidence and let’s see how the game will go in South Africa,” he said. Keshi also said that at the interval, he told his players to play their normal game and in the second half they really woke up. On their second match against South Africa, next week, Keshi said, “we have to win, if we will qualify. “To Nigerians, we say this kind of thing happens at times, this is football,” Keshi said. Vice President of Congo Football Federation, Mr. John Paul Fouane, told the News Agency of Nigeria that despite their victory, Nigeria had a good team. “I am very happy because Nigeria is a good team. We were surprised at the outcome of the match. “Today is not good for Nigeria and Nigeria should not be underrated. Nigeria is still good and has chances of qualifying for the Nations cup,” he said. Nigeria had scored the first goal in the 15th minute when Efe Ambrose nodded in a pullout from Ahmed Musa. Congo equalised in the 17th minute through Oniangue Chince. Gbolahon Salami scored the second goal for Nigeria in the 89th minute.
